When Steam Cleaning
Is the Wrong Choice

Hot water extraction is the right method for most residential carpet and a genuinely bad idea in several specific situations. A cleaner who never says no to it is not paying attention to the material.

Method

When Steam Cleaning Is the Wrong Choice

01

Solvent-only upholstery

An S-coded fabric is stating that water will damage it. Hot water extraction on S-coded upholstery produces rings at the boundary of every wet area, shrinkage that distorts seams, and sometimes a stiffened, papery hand across the whole panel. The damage appears as the piece dries and is generally not reversible. Solvent cleaning achieves a good result on these fabrics with none of the risk.

02

Wool and silk area rugs

A rug is not fixed to the floor and its foundation is often cotton, which browns as it dries slowly. Dyes in hand-knotted rugs are frequently not colourfast, and once a red field bleeds into an ivory border the rug is permanently altered. Immersion washing off site with controlled water, proper flushing and flat drying is the correct approach. In-home extraction on a valuable rug is how expensive rugs get ruined.

03

Jute, sisal and seagrass

Natural plant fibres brown and stiffen when wet, and the browning comes from within the fibre rather than from soil, so it cannot be cleaned off afterwards. Sisal also shrinks and can pull a bound edge out of shape. These materials are dry-cleaned or, in many cases, honestly beyond restoration once heavily soiled. Any offer to steam clean a sisal rug should be declined.

04

Delaminating or sealed backing

Older carpet, particularly in basements, sometimes has a backing that has separated from the face or a moisture barrier beneath it. Water introduced there sits between the layers with nowhere to evaporate to, and odour follows within days. If a carpet feels loose or bubbled underfoot, that is worth raising before any wet method is used.

05

Mattresses

A mattress cannot be taken outdoors, cannot be hung to dry, and has a core that no vacuum head can reach. Saturating one guarantees moisture in the middle for days, which is how mould establishes inside bedding. Low-moisture application with high recovery and air movement is the only responsible approach, and it is the reason mattress work is priced and scheduled differently from carpet.
