Hand-Knotted or
Machine-Made?

The construction determines the cleaning method, the drying approach and often whether a rug is worth restoring at all. Four checks will tell you, and none require any expertise.

Hand-Knotted or Machine-Made?

01

Look at the back

On a hand-knotted rug the pattern on the reverse is as clear as the pattern on the face, because the design is formed by individual knots tied through the foundation. Machine-made rugs show a grid-like or slightly blurred reverse, often with a visible backing material or latex holding the construction together. This is the fastest and most reliable single check.

02

Check the fringe

On a hand-knotted rug the fringe is the warp thread of the foundation itself, running through the entire rug and emerging at both ends. It is structural. On most machine-made rugs the fringe is sewn or glued on afterwards as decoration, and you can often see the seam where it attaches. A fringe that could be removed without unravelling anything is a strong indicator of machine construction.

03

Look for irregularity

Hand work is never perfectly uniform. Slight variation in knot size, a border that is a fraction wider at one end, or a colour that shifts subtly across a field — abrash, caused by different dye batches — are all signs of hand production and are considered desirable rather than faults. Machine-made rugs are geometrically consistent throughout.

04

Why it changes the cleaning

A hand-knotted wool rug with unstable natural dyes needs colour testing, controlled immersion and flat drying, and it is usually worth the cost of doing that properly. A machine-made synthetic rug is dimensionally stable, dries quickly and can often be cleaned in the home. Knowing which you have prevents both overspending on a rug that does not need specialist work and, more expensively, undertreating one that does.
