Why Wool Rugs Go
Off Site

A wall-to-wall carpet is attached to a floor and cleaned from the top. A rug is a free object with a face, a foundation and a fringe, and doing it properly requires water volume and drying control that no living room can provide.

Why Wool Rugs Go Off Site

01

Dusting comes before any water

The first stage is entirely dry. A wool rug holds an extraordinary quantity of fine particulate deep in the foundation — several pounds is not unusual in a room-size rug that has been down for years — and introducing water before removing it turns that dust into mud within the weave. Off site, a rug is dusted mechanically from both faces until nothing further comes out. There is no equivalent step possible in a home.

02

Colour testing and controlled immersion

Every colour in the field and border is tested individually for bleed before immersion, because a single unstable red will ruin an ivory ground permanently. Washing then happens in controlled water volume with the rug flat and fully accessible from both sides, followed by flushing that carries suspended soil and residual detergent out of the foundation rather than leaving it behind. Flushing at that volume is impossible over a finished floor.

03

Flat drying is the part people underestimate

A wet wool rug is extremely heavy, and hung to dry it will distort permanently under its own weight. Dried slowly, a cotton foundation browns from within. Off site, rugs dry flat with controlled airflow so the foundation dries at the same rate as the pile and the rug keeps its shape. This is the stage that takes the most time and is the main reason a rug is away for several days rather than hours.

04

What comes back

A properly washed rug returns dry through the foundation, with the pile groomed in direction, fringes cleaned rather than bleached, and no residual detergent to attract soil. Collection and return across Huntington Township are part of the job. Small synthetic rugs that hold little water can often be handled in the home; wool, silk and anything with pet contamination should not be.
