Steam vs Dry
Carpet Cleaning

Hot water extraction removes more soil and takes longer to dry. Low-moisture methods dry in under an hour and remove less. Neither is better in the abstract; they answer different questions.

Method

Steam vs Dry Carpet Cleaning

01

What hot water extraction actually does

Heated solution is delivered into the pile under pressure and immediately recovered through a vacuum slot in the same head. The heat lowers the viscosity of oils so they release from the fibre, the pressure carries solution down to the base of the pile where the soil actually sits, and the recovery slot pulls the loosened material back out. It is the method most carpet manufacturers specify, and for heavily soiled residential carpet it removes substantially more than any alternative.

02

What low-moisture methods do

Encapsulation and bonnet cleaning apply a small volume of polymer-based solution that surrounds soil particles and crystallises around them as it dries. The encapsulated soil is then removed by vacuuming, often the following day. Drying takes under an hour, there is no risk to a pad or subfloor, and it is well suited to commercial carpet that must be walked on immediately. On deeply soiled residential pile it lifts surface material well but leaves more at the base.

03

Choosing by situation

A family home with pets, children and eighteen months of accumulated soil wants extraction. An office that cannot close, a hallway that must be usable in an hour, or a maintenance clean between full extractions is a good fit for low moisture. Carpet over a slab in a basement where drying is slow is often better served by low moisture. Delicate or unstable fibres frequently rule out hot water regardless of soil level.

04

The hybrid approach

On many jobs the right answer combines both: extraction on the heavily used rooms and traffic lanes, low moisture on lightly used bedrooms, and a plan that puts the slowest-drying areas first so they have the longest to dry before evening. Any cleaner who only offers one method will recommend that method for every situation, which is worth knowing when you are given advice.
