Carpet
A truck-mounted unit generates vacuum from an engine in the van and sustains it across an entire house. A rental machine runs on a household outlet and produces a fraction of that lift. Both put a similar volume of water into the carpet. One takes most of it back out; the other leaves the majority in the pile and the pad. That surplus is what causes slow drying, residue and, in bad cases, odour from a pad that never fully dried.
Oil releases from fibre at temperature. A truck mount holds solution temperature consistently because the heat exchanger runs off the engine. A rental unit relies on whatever came out of your tap and loses it steadily through the hose and across the floor. By the second room the solution is doing much less work, which is why rental cleanings often look good in the first area and progressively worse as you go.
It is a reasonable tool for a small area cleaned promptly: one bedroom, a stair runner, a fresh spill on a synthetic carpet. Used with half the recommended detergent, followed by two or three passes of plain water to rinse, and with a fan on the area afterwards, a rental machine will do an acceptable job on light soil. The failure mode is treating it as a whole-house solution on carpet that has not been cleaned in years.
A weekend rental plus solution is rarely as cheap as it appears once you add the second day people commonly need. Set against that, the real cost of getting it wrong is not the rental fee, it is a carpet that re-soils in a month, a warranty voided because the manufacturer required professional extraction, or a pad that stayed wet under a large wet area. On a small job the maths favours the rental. On a whole floor it usually does not.
