Carpet
Dining chairs, side tables, floor lamps, magazine racks, plant stands and pet beds all move easily and all sit in areas that genuinely need cleaning. Clearing them before the technician arrives saves appointment time, which on an hourly-influenced job is money. Anything breakable, valuable or sentimental is best moved by you rather than by someone unfamiliar with it, and the same goes for electronics with cabling that is awkward to reconnect.
Large bookcases, china cabinets, entertainment units, beds and full-size sofas usually stay. The carpet underneath them sees no foot traffic, holds no meaningful soil, and is not visible. Moving a loaded cabinet risks damaging the unit, the floor and the person moving it, for a section of carpet nobody will ever see. Cleaners generally clean up to and slightly under the edge, which is the visible boundary, and leave the rest.
A dresser that will be shifted needs its drawers emptied, because loaded drawers make a piece far heavier than it looks and shift weight unpredictably mid-lift. Bookcases should be cleared even if they are only being pulled forward a few inches. This is the step most often skipped and the one most likely to cause damage.
Furniture returned to damp carpet can leave marks. Wooden legs can release stain into a light pile, and metal glides can leave rust spots that are extremely difficult to remove. Plastic tabs or foam blocks under the feet prevent both and stay in place until the carpet is dry. If a piece has already left a mark from a previous cleaning, mention it before the job rather than after, because the same feet will do it again.
