The knot is the real distinction
Persian rugs traditionally use the asymmetric or Senneh knot, which wraps fully around one warp and passes behind the other. It allows finer detail and curvilinear designs, which is why Persian floral and medallion patterns can be so intricate. Turkish rugs traditionally use the symmetric or Ghiordes knot, wrapped around two warps, which is more robust and lends itself to bold geometric patterns. Neither is superior; they produce different capabilities.
