When the Carpet Pad
Has to Come Out

Sometimes the honest answer is that cleaning will not fix it. A pad saturated with urine holds a reservoir that no carpet-side treatment reaches, and pretending otherwise wastes the customer money.

When the Carpet Pad Has to Come Out

01

How pad contamination happens

Carpet pad is open-cell foam or bonded rebond designed to compress and recover, which makes it extremely absorbent. Urine passes through the carpet backing in seconds and the pad soaks it up like a sponge, spreading laterally well beyond the visible mark. Repeat accidents in the same place saturate it completely. The carpet above can be cleaned to a genuinely good standard while the pad underneath continues to hold the entire deposit.

02

The signs

Odour that returns within days of a thorough cleaning is the clearest indicator. A UV survey showing a contaminated area substantially larger than the surface mark suggests volume that a carpet face could not have held. A spot that feels slightly springy or that releases a smell when pressed firmly is another. And where a dog has used the same corner for months rather than a single accident, pad involvement should be assumed rather than tested for.

03

What the work involves

The affected section of carpet is lifted, the contaminated pad cut out and disposed of, and the subfloor beneath inspected — plywood absorbs urine too and often needs sealing. New pad is fitted, the carpet backing is treated from underneath where the deposit sits, and the carpet is re-stretched and re-seamed at the edge. It is a bigger job than a cleaning and it is the only approach that actually resolves saturated pad.

04

Why it is the cheaper path

Owners frequently pay for two or three cleanings across a couple of years, each of which helps for a few weeks, before accepting that the pad is the issue. The total of those cleanings usually exceeds the cost of doing the work properly the first time, and the smell was present throughout. Being told plainly that a spot needs pad replacement is not an upsell; it is the answer that stops you paying repeatedly for a result that cannot last.
