Huntington & Long Island — Answered 24 Hours a Day

The First Hour After
a Pet Accident

Fresh urine has not yet crystallised and has not yet spread far. Handled correctly in the first hour, most accidents leave nothing behind. Handled badly, the same accident becomes a permanent deposit.

The First Hour After a Pet Accident

01

Blot, do not rub

Press a thick pad of white towelling firmly into the spot and stand on it. Weight and time do the work; the aim is to draw liquid upward into the towel before it travels further down. Replace the towel as it saturates and repeat until fresh towelling comes away nearly dry. Rubbing does the opposite of what you want: it drives liquid deeper into the backing and distorts the carpet pile, leaving a fuzzy patch that stays visible after the stain is gone.

02

Dilute, then blot again

Once no more liquid is coming up, apply a small amount of cool water — enough to dilute what remains, not enough to spread it — and blot again with the same pressure. This lowers the concentration of what is left in the fibre. Cool water only: heat sets protein and can bond the stain permanently to the fibre, which is the single most damaging thing people do at this stage.

03

What not to reach for

Steam cleaners and hot water make it permanent. Ammonia-based products smell like urine to an animal and encourage them to return to the same spot. Vinegar is widely recommended and does little on the odour source. Strong oxidisers can bleach carpet dye and can also denature the enzyme products that would otherwise work later. If in doubt, plain cool water and blotting does no harm and leaves every option open.

04

When to call rather than continue

If the volume was large, if it happened on a wool or silk rug, if the same spot has been used repeatedly, or if the smell persists once the area is dry, the deposit has gone beyond what surface work reaches. The line here is answered at any hour precisely because these things happen at night and on weekends, and the first hours are when the outcome is still in play.
