Storing an
Oriental Rug

More rugs are damaged in storage than in use. The damage is almost always moisture, moths or crushing, and all three come from the same few avoidable mistakes.

Storing an Oriental Rug

01

Wash it first, always

A rug going into storage carrying food residue, perspiration, pet oil or soil is an invitation to moths, which are drawn to soiled wool far more than to clean wool. Anything organic in the pile also has months or years to react with the dyes. Washing before storage costs the same as washing at any other time and prevents the two most expensive storage outcomes.

02

Roll, never fold

Fold a rug and the crease crushes the pile and stresses the foundation along a straight line; left folded for a year the crease becomes permanent and the foundation can crack there. Roll it instead, with the pile facing inward so the outer surface is the more robust reverse, and roll in the direction of the pile rather than against it. Keep it as straight as possible and never bend a rolled rug to fit a space.

03

Never wrap in plastic

Plastic sheeting traps moisture against wool and produces mould and dry rot in the foundation, and it is the single most common storage mistake. Use breathable material instead: cotton sheeting, unbleached muslin or Tyvek. The wrap keeps dust and insects off while letting moisture move. If the rug must be off the ground on a concrete floor, raise it on a pallet or shelving rather than laying it down.

04

Where, and checking on it

A climate-controlled interior space is right. Basements, garages and attics on Long Island all swing in humidity, and coastal humidity in the Huntington waterfront neighbourhoods makes basements a genuinely poor choice. Unroll and inspect once a year, which also disturbs the dark undisturbed conditions moth larvae need. A rug stored properly for a decade comes out fine; one stored in plastic in a basement for two years often does not.
