Mattress
A mattress core is enclosed. Water driven into foam or fibre in the middle of a mattress has no path to the surface except slow evaporation through the layers above it, and that can take days. During those days the core is warm, damp and enclosed, which is precisely the environment mould needs. Once it establishes inside a mattress there is no cleaning process that reaches it, and the mattress is finished.
Carpet that gets too wet can be lifted, the pad replaced, and air moved underneath. A rug can go to a facility and dry flat. A mattress is too heavy and too awkward to move, cannot be hung, cannot be turned onto a fan, and in most homes there is nowhere else for the household to sleep. Everything about the method follows from that constraint.
Solution is applied to the surface in controlled quantity rather than injected under pressure, worked into the top layer where the deposit is, then recovered with high vacuum lift in multiple passes. Air movement across the surface finishes the job before the technician leaves. In practice a mattress cleaned this way is dry to the touch within an hour or two and safe to sleep on that night, which is the standard to hold anyone to.
Urine that has penetrated to the core, a mattress past roughly eight to ten years and visibly sagging, or one with existing mould are all cases where cleaning improves the surface and does not solve the actual problem. Honest advice there saves money. Accidents on a bed need the same depth of treatment as pet contamination in carpet, which is why the two are quoted separately.
